Gangs, Constraints, and Courageous Blocks

On Saturday, Bill and James went to Guitar Center in Pasadena to kill time. I’m the opposite. I don’t like going to the mall unless I’m going to buy something, but I digress.

Bill loves the tone and bite of that Orange amp. Someday, Bill.

When I was hanging out with them that afternoon, they told me about a used Line 6 Bass PODxt Live for $200 — that’s $100 off for a new board! My tax return was deposited last week, and I planned on buying some sort of effects pedal for my setup, so we took another trip out there. I got it!

Sort of. In case it’s stolen, it’s on lay away until the 23rd. I paid the reserve so nobody else can buy it. (California law. I haven’t done that before, but Bill assured me.) I might be ready to use it up for our next show, but that’s three days after I pick it up. We’ll see. We’re pretty stoked.

Yesterday, I re-listened to 43f Podcast: Gangs, Constraints, and Courageous Blocks. It’s an MP3 that’ll stay on my iPod for occasional listening. Everybody needs to listen to it.

Done?

We need these blocks of time to create music. Photography is my other outlet that I hope will be more someday. When I’m not at work, school, or making music, I’m either on my computer processing photos or on a photowalk.

Don’t get me wrong. I watch a lot of focused bursts of TV and movies. You can blame Hulu and Netflix/InstantWatcher. But, I set aside time for that.

It’s why we’re trying to post here regularly.

When I hear someone say, “Oh, I’m too busy to [insert excuse here],” they usually don’t want it bad enough. I also think it’s an excuse people make when someone is trying to ask them out (friends or more). Everyone is busy, but if you really like someone, you’ll make the time.

Offended? I hope not. I’ve been guilty, too.

Other than those uncontrollable circumstances that get dropped into your lap (I feel for you), take matter into your hands. The size of your project doesn’t matter. Grab some paper (or fire up Dark Room), set aside time to brainstorm about anything you want to do, then make some ridiculous stuff for yourself, family, friends, neighborhood, company, or the world.

P.S. Merlin Mann is awesome.
