Occupation

Flying through space @ thousands of miles per hour on a rock mostly covered with water is surprisingly dry and calm. What’s an ape to do with all the time he/she has on it? I have no clue. Ask 100 people this question, and you might get 100 different answers, and no single answer will be able to conclusively disprove, our outmatch all the others. There is however a strong value in society on the almighty money. Money can be traded for anything and is the medium by which many a man and many a dream have been deemed commendable, or condemnable by the others.  A common question one will hear amongst casual talk is, “What do you do?” We’ve been conditioned to answer this question with a boring story about what we do for money in other words where, and what we’re supposed to be doing at “work”.  The word occupation has been bastardized for the sake of uniformity and the glorification of the 9-5 machine that swallows men up and spits them out with nothing left 35-40 years later.

Over the last few years, I have been occupied with sounds; listening, creating, studying, mixing, analyzing, manipulating, and whatever else one can imagine doing with sounds. Sound has been my occupation. Sounds have kept me sane while driving me crazy. Sounds have put me in exactly the place where I want to be, which is nowhere at all. Sounds have made me feel like a god, and they’ve made me feel like a slug. Sounds have given me great joy, and driven me to deep depression all in one day. My occupation with sound has produced great metaphorical riches, and very little of what we call money.

With The Scarlet Paradigm I have had the chance to write, perform, and produce some sounds, which I think are pretty cool. Over the last year and a half or so with this band I’ve developed a tangible dream in which I can actually make my occupation (sound) be the same thing as my job, bypass the 9-5 machine, and have a kick-ass time on this rock we’re possibly stuck on.

I’m chasing my dreams in sound, and I’m very thankful to all my friends and family for the support. Perchance, one day the dream will support itself as well as my loved ones and I. Thanks for occupying your mind with my words :) !!!

Are we chasers or schemers?

Saturday morning, I watched The Dark Knight again. It’s an incredible movie.

One of my favorite dialogues takes place when Joker is talking to Two-Face in the hospital.

Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it! You know…I just do things. The mob has plans. The cops have plans. Gordon’s got plans. You know…they’re schemers. Schemers trying to control their little worlds. I’m not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. (Joker, The Dark Knight)

The Joker is demented, but I can’t help but think he has a point. What category am I in?

There’s always a fear in everything we do in this band.

  • Will we bring a crowd?
  • Will we nail that tough part in a new song?
  • Will our fans like the new songs?
  • Will our amps and monitors sound even throughout the venue?
  • Once we get our shirts and CDs, will we sell them all?

I tend to calculate my odds before pursuing an objective. Unfortunately, that’ll only go so far. After a certain point, I need to jump.

I love this band because there’s a balance. The other guys will push me when needed, and I’ll pull them back when I think they’re nuts.

When we started talking about the EP, the guys placed me in charge of the album art. I put it off due to fear of rejection. It was one of the reasons for the delay. After speaking my mind, someone pointed out that we’d never get anywhere if we didn’t try. If that isn’t a “duh” moment, what is?

As of Saturday, it’s finally done and the guys dig it. Plus, it features my photography. Bonus! For now, you can see the front insert cover art. (Already downloaded the EP? Get the new cover art here. If you use iTunes, see “Adding album art in iTunes.”)

Need more food for thought? Listen to this 33-minute podcast with Merlin Mann interviewing Seth Godin. They give incredible insight about marketing, work and creativity. In a 12-hour period, I’ve listened to it four or five times.

P.S. On a related note, thanks to our friend, Mike Kang, for leaving a great comment. In Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, it takes 10,000 hours of hard work, luck, and timing to achieve success. I plan on reading the book once I get the new theme up. We have our work cut out for us, huh?

Seven years

The other day, I found out that one of my favorite bands was close to releasing a new album. I started reading their Wikipedia page:

After spending 7 years as a local band, recording demos and three EPs, Story of the Year signed a deal with Maverick Records in 2002, then recorded and released their first album, Page Avenue, in September 2003. (Story of the Year, Wikipedia)

And another favorite band:

Rx Bandits is a four-piece band based in Seal Beach, California. The band formed in 1995 in Orange County, California. They have appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and at The Bamboozle. (Rx Bandits, Wikipedia)

One more — The Mars Volta formed in 2001. I’d consider them pretty huge now. They’ve won a Grammy.

There are lots of other bands that took a while to gain a following. It seems like a regular trend.

My point? If it takes 7-15 years of my life for the band to gain traction, I’m down.

A few weeks ago, we took several hours out of our weekend to attend one of the SPARS Sessions at NAMM 2010 to hear “Building a Buzz and Selling your Music Online: how to make the most of today’s internet music landscape (and double your sales in the process) – an industry expert round table.”

Saying that the panel was really informative doesn’t do it justice. I think they did a great job giving us insight.

The mailing list is now on MailChimp for its flexibility, stats and friendly service. We’re getting shirts for our fans. The digital CD is on Bandcamp to help with distribution and stat tracking. Lastly, we’ll release the physical CD in the next couple weeks.

Because of our journey, I have hope.

Facts:

  • Bill, James and I have made music for the past five years.
  • Chris has been with us for a little over one year.
  • Bill is one of the most talented and dedicated musicians I know — and he’s self-taught.
  • Chris can write lyrics and create a new a melody with ease.
  • James is an epic drummer (also self-taught).

just another wednesday…

Buongiorno, (that’s “hello” in italian)

I hope everybody is getting their money’s worth (or lack thereof) of our first EP You Don’t Need This… It’s always a treat when you finish something that you’ve been working on for a long time and share it with people. If you haven’t gotten a chance to listen and download it, make sure you check out our Bandcamp Page, where you can do so. I would describe it as naughty and perverted with a little bit of OH-NO-THEY-DIDN’T.

Anyways, I bet you’d like to know what I’m up to this weekend. I’m pretty busy with snowboarding at Mountain High in Wrightwood, CA, Chris’ Birthday dinner-thing, and a show on Saturday at CKB in Pasadena. I must say that playing music in front of people, whether it be 5 or 5000, is the most fun I could have without taking my pants off. Hm, maybe I should try playing my drums with my pants off; I bet that would be fun (all opposed say “Nay”).

I invite you to come and hang out with us Saturday night. If you see me and mention this blog post I will personally buy you a drink. I’m not sure if CKB sells beverages, but  in any case I’ll limit this offer to the first 3 people who come up to me, so I don’t go bankrupt. Take it easy, hope all is well…

Mondays…

Hey,

So here I sit at my computer desk at work, early in the morning, thinking to myself, “man I hope our band makes it and we could play full time”. Every band member’s dream, right?

Anyway, I am feeling in a good place right now, because things with The Scarlet Paradigm are all starting to fall into place and take direction. We had a great rehearsal yesterday, and ran through a couple of new songs (you can hear them at our 1/30 show) and they sound great! We released our EP to the Bandcamp Page last Tuesday, and we have a good bit of merch coming soon for everybody to get their hands on. Things are looking up. It is times like this that makes being in a band worth it, and getting to share it with great people at our shows is the icing on the cake for us. Thanks for all you do, and we’ll see you at the next show!

Also, if you’d like to stay updated on where we’re at in life, make sure to hit up and join our mailing list.

On that note, since I am feeling crazy at the moment, I leave you with this:
